Ingredients

Cinnamon Apples
  • 4 tart apples, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • Pinch of nutmeg, optional
  • Splash of vanilla extract, optional
Oat Topping
  • 3/4 cup old fashioned oats
  • 3/4 cup light brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup salted butter, cold and cubed

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F / 175°C.
  2. Peel and slice the apples into thin pieces, then spread them evenly in a greased baking dish.
  3. Season the apples with 1 teaspoon of cinnamon, adding the optional nutmeg and vanilla extract if desired.
Topping
  1. Mix the oats, flour, brown sugar, and 1 teaspoon of cinnamon together in a bowl.
  2. Work the cold cubed butter into the oat mixture using a pastry cutter or fork until coarse crumbs develop.
  3. Distribute the oat topping evenly over the cinnamon apples to cover the top.
Baking
  1. Bake the apple crisp for about 40 minutes, until the apples are tender and the topping is crisp and golden.
  2. Allow the apple crisp to rest for about 10 minutes before serving so the filling can thicken slightly.
Serving
  1. Serve warm with optional vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, or caramel sauce.

Notes

Use firm baking apples and keep the butter cold to help create a crisp topping texture.
