Apple Filling
  • 4 large apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • ⅓ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
Crumble Topping
  • ½ cup all-purpose flour
  • ⅓ cup old-fashioned oats
  • ⅓ cup packed light brown sugar
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
Serving
  • Vanilla ice cream, optional for serving
  • Whipped cream, optional for serving
  • Caramel sauce, optional for serving
  • Chopped pecans or walnuts, optional for serving

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Heat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease a 9x9-inch baking dish.
  2. Coat the sliced apples with lemon juice, granulated sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg in a large bowl.
  3. Mix the all-purpose flour, old-fashioned oats, light brown sugar, and salt in a separate bowl.
  4. Work the cold cubed butter into the flour mixture until coarse crumbs form.
Baking
  1. Arrange the seasoned apple mixture evenly in the prepared baking dish.
  2. Cover the apples evenly with the crumble topping, keeping the topping loose.
  3. Bake for 40–45 minutes until the topping is golden brown and the apple filling bubbles around the edges.
  4. Allow the apple crisp to cool slightly before serving warm with optional vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, caramel sauce, or chopped nuts.

Notes

Use cold butter in the crumble topping to help create a crisp texture.
