- Place a large skillet over medium heat. Add the ground beef and cook, breaking it into small pieces, until browned and the center reaches 160°F (71°C).
- Drain off excess grease if necessary, keeping a small amount in the skillet. Add the garlic and cook for 1 minute.
- Stir in the soy sauce, sesame oil, brown sugar or honey, black pepper, and red pepper flakes, if using, until the beef is thoroughly coated.
- Cook at a simmer for 2 to 3 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce lightly thickens and coats the beef.
Assembly
- Divide the warm rice among four bowls. Top with the beef mixture and sliced green onions.
Notes
Optional toppings include sesame seeds, cucumber, kimchi, steamed broccoli, or a fried egg. Store the beef and rice separately in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
