Ingredients

Korean Ground Beef
  • 1 pound (454 g) ground beef
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar or honey
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes, optional
For Serving
  • 2 cups cooked rice, warmed
  • 2 green onions, thinly sliced

Method

Cooking
  1. Place a large skillet over medium heat. Add the ground beef and cook, breaking it into small pieces, until browned and the center reaches 160°F (71°C).
  2. Drain off excess grease if necessary, keeping a small amount in the skillet. Add the garlic and cook for 1 minute.
  3. Stir in the soy sauce, sesame oil, brown sugar or honey, black pepper, and red pepper flakes, if using, until the beef is thoroughly coated.
  4. Cook at a simmer for 2 to 3 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce lightly thickens and coats the beef.
Assembly
  1. Divide the warm rice among four bowls. Top with the beef mixture and sliced green onions.

Notes

Optional toppings include sesame seeds, cucumber, kimchi, steamed broccoli, or a fried egg. Store the beef and rice separately in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
